Passage
The Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive architectural achievements in human history. Stretching over 21,000 kilometers, this massive structure was built over many centuries, with construction beginning as early as the 7th century BCE. The wall was primarily built to protect Chinese states and empires from invasions and raids by nomadic groups from the northern regions.
The most famous sections of the wall that we see today were built during the Ming Dynasty, between 1368 and 1644 CE. These sections feature strong bricks and stones, unlike the earlier portions which were made of earth and wood. The wall wasn't built by one ruler or in one time period; instead, different dynasties contributed to its construction, each adding their own sections and improvements.
Building the Great Wall required enormous human effort. Historians estimate that hundreds of thousands of workers, including soldiers, peasants, and prisoners, were involved in its construction. Many workers died during the building process, and their sacrifice contributed to one of the world's most recognizable landmarks. Today, the Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors from around the world who come to marvel at this ancient wonder.
